XFADER.COM

Just another funky Skratch site

So apparently there is controversy in the LA DJ battle scene. Or lack of controversy i would say. You decide who won…because a lot of DJ’s who are dope aren’t even competing.

Official results:
Dj Shmeeze | 1st Place
Dj Massacre aka Dj Bandoma | 2nd Place

90′s R&B (post Mary J Blige) exploded thanks to Bad Boy. MJB was probably the first artist to mix beats and soulful lyrics to allow DJ’s to spin tunes on the dance floor other than New Jack Swing or rough rugged Hip-Hop. Total was my group though. They had massive tunes. Can’t You See with Biggie was a big tune for me. Sittin Home was also one of my favs.
So if you got the instrumentals to all these 90′s R&B tunes….rack em up…and Skratch!

Late last night I saw a tweet fly by about world famous DJ Jazzy Jeff getting the boot from the DJ booth of a club in Vegas. He was honoring the late DJ AM. A few years ago DJ AM and DJ Jazzy Jeff did a now legendary 4 turntable performance in Vegas. Well, for a celebration of the life of DJ AM, I would think that the club that hosted this party would have some respect for DJ Jazzy Jeff and the legacy of DJ AM. Now, I don’t know the details of what happened but I have been noticing other DJ’s complain that they have been told to not play certain types of music or asked to not come back because they played certain types of music. So let’s cut the bullshit…we know what these promoters and establishment owners are saying. They don’t want people of certain ethnicity in their establishment and don’t want Hip-Hop/Rap/Reggae played at their spots. They just want to cater to the barbie dance music crowd. So to promoters and establishment owners I say this: That’s fine…tell us up front. Don’t hide behind the racism and just spell it out first hand on contracts and agreements that we sign prior to doing gigs. Don’t use your fear of losing business to mask your racism. Being exposed about your racism is actually better then denying it. At least that way we know which team you’re on.
Enjoy the videos and keep “The Dream” alive.

LA Beatdown

Latino Turntablists don’t really get a cultural representation because the focus has always been on skills in a Hip-Hop context. The argument is that Tablism transcends ethnicity in a particular context. However, with DJing a global phenomena, cultural backgrounds, ethnicity, and regional elements make their way into routines, styles, and music. I always felt that the Latin (aka anyone who speaks Spanish of Latin American descent) DJ scene catered mainly to party rocking scenes. The audio in this clip is wonky but it’s just an example of how the Latin DJ scene has differences from the hardcore tablist scene we’re used to seeing. From time to time we’re gonna push the discussion on how DJing treats us as human beings and what it means to be a DJ in the 21st Century. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated. For xfader dot com however, regardless of ethnicity or nationality…KEEP SKRATCHING brethren.

Coming to you all the way from the south east, 6…yes 6! Skratch Videos!!! We like their intros.

The Bridge

Still unsure how “The Bridge” is going to work. In the simplest terms, ScratchLive will now have a screen for transport control of Ableton Live Clips. However, you will only be able to launch clips and “play” them. Audio scrubbing similar to vinyl emulation is not available. Check the videos at the Serato site. The Bridge Intro and In depth with The Bridge. It does appear that this will be CPU and RAM intensive. One thing that we know a lot of DJ’s are doing to get around this is to just export their clips form Ableton as individuals loops and samples. However, controlling an Ableton set via Serato might be helpful to a lot of people who are into tweaking their sets. The inability to cut and skratch the clips is a minus however.

We’re unable to share the video on here unless so if you’re interested in what the Serato and Ableton marriage looks like you’ll have to visit and support the folks at Serato and Ableton.

Twitter has been all chatter with the closing of Fat Beats. People telling their memories about the store. I have a few fond memories as well. In the LA store I got to meet Rhettmatic and Babu of the Beat Junkies. Two of the nicest people I have ever met in Hip-Hop. Aimee also worked there as well and was helpful. The other employees I’ve met were jerks. I remember going to buy the Aceyalone record to support a local LA artist. I also wanted to see what other things I could find. After not finding anything I grabbed the Acey record and proceeded to cashier. He gave me a look and said “that’s it” as if I was wasting his time? Was it my fault I saw nothing interesting in the store or owned original or even re-pressed UK or Japan imprint of a 12″ on the wall? Another time i went in looking for “Just like Music” 12″ I wanted it because I figured it would make a nice juggle routine. The guy working there said they didn’t have it and that juggling that song wouldn’t sound good. Well the homie Nando won an ITF battle with that juggle. I never shopped at Fat Beats in LA after that. My Fat Beats NYC stories are much better. there was always someone I knew that worked there and people had respect for the customer. I did buy some suspect respects from there though. Well, Salute! Fat Beats. 16 years well deserved and earned.
